CSCS Test Revision Plan
Most people revising for the CSCS test do the same thing: take mock after mock until the score looks acceptable, then book. It works eventually and it wastes a lot of evenings. This is the order that gets there faster, and it costs nothing.
The short version
Measure first with a free CSCS practice test, revise the gaps, drill your wrong answers, then return to the clock. Book when 45 out of 50 has stopped feeling close. The exam is 50 questions in 45 minutes with a 90% pass mark, so there is very little room for the topics you decided to skip.
The five stages, in order

Sit one full mock cold
Before revising anything, take a timed 50-question mock and accept whatever it gives you. The score is not the point. The breakdown is. Revising topics you already know is the commonest way to waste a fortnight, and you cannot tell which those are until something measures you.

Read your weakest areas, do not re-test them
Take the two or three topics you scored worst on and work through them untimed, with the explanations on. At this stage you want to understand why the right answer is right. Speed comes later and comes free.

Drill the wrong answers specifically
Every mock records what you got wrong so you can practise exactly those again. A question you got wrong once is worth ten you already know. This is where most of the improvement between a 38 and a 46 actually comes from.

Go back to full timed mocks
Once your weak topics stop feeling weak, return to the clock. Questions are reshuffled every attempt, so a second run is not the same paper, and if you have been memorising answer positions rather than the knowledge this is where it shows.

Book only when 45 is routine
One pass at exactly 45 out of 50 is as much luck as knowledge. The benchmark is clearing the pass mark across several attempts without it feeling close. Booking early costs £23.50 and a second trip.
What you actually have to cover
CITB publishes five core knowledge areas for the Operatives test: working environment, occupational health, safety, high risk activities, and specialist. Every question in the real exam sits in one of them.
Five headings is the right map for the exam and the wrong unit for revision, because “occupational health” alone covers dust, noise, vibration, manual handling and welfare. We split the same syllabus into 21 narrower topics, each small enough to finish in one sitting. Those 21are our split, not CITB's labels.
Work them from your mock breakdown rather than top to bottom. The topic question banks are untimed and show the explanation as soon as you answer.
Five ways revision goes wrong
Retaking the same mock over and over
Your score climbs, your knowledge does not. You are learning the paper. Alternate between topic drilling and full mocks, and treat a rising score on a repeated test as meaningless.
Revising the interesting topics
Working at height and electrical safety feel like real construction, so they get the attention. Health and welfare, environmental duties and reporting feel like paperwork, and they carry marks worth exactly the same.
Skimming the multi-answer questions
You only score when every correct option is selected, so a half-right answer scores the same as a wrong one. In a test that allows five mistakes, two careless multi-answer questions is most of your margin gone.
Answering how site actually works
Questions ask what should happen on a compliant site, not what you have seen done. If your honest answer and the by-the-book answer differ, the test wants the book.
Leaving anything blank
Only correct answers count and there is no penalty for a wrong guess. Eliminate what is obviously wrong and pick from the rest. A blank is a guaranteed nil.
Should you buy the official materials?
CITB publishes GT100, its official revision publication for the Operatives test, which CITB states contains all of the content covered in the test, in question-and-answer form. How to know you are ready
You are ready when you clear 45 out of 50 on full timed mocks several times running, and no single topic is dragging. Not once. Several times. The real test will not hand you the same 50 questions, and a retake costs the full £23.50 again.
