Is there a separate CSCS test for labourers?
No. Labourers sit the same Operatives test as most trades: 50 questions, 45 minutes, and 45 correct to pass, which is 90%.
The Level 1 Award course has its own assessment, run by the training provider. It is not the CITB test, so a practice paper with a different length or pass mark is practice for something else.
What else you need for a Labourer card
The test is one of two requirements. CSCS also asks for one of:
- the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment (Level 4 in Scotland)
- the NOCN/CSkills Awards Construction Health and Safety unit
- the REHIS Elementary Health and Safety Certificate
- a CSCS approved alternative qualification
Your test pass must be from the last two years when you apply. The first card runs for two years, and the renewal rules are on the Green CSCS Card (Labourer) page.
After a green card mock test: drill your weak topics
Your score shows where the marks went. The topics furthest from labouring work tend to cost the most: practise the CDM Regulations questions, the Accident Reporting (RIDDOR) & First Aid questions and the Environmental Awareness & Waste questions, then sit another full mock.
Not working as a labourer?
CSCS states that skilled workers holding a Labourer card will be refused site access. If you have a construction NVQ or SVQ, go to the CSCS blue card mock test or, at Level 3 and for supervisors, the CSCS gold card mock test.

CSCS labourer mock test: common questions
- Is the green card mock test the same paper as the Operatives test?
- Yes. The Green Labourer card uses the CITB HS&E test for Operatives, so a green card mock and an Operatives mock are practice for one exam. Our mock follows that format: 50 questions, 45 minutes, 45 correct to pass.
- Will a test pass alone get me a Labourer card?
- No. CSCS also asks for the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment or one of the alternatives it accepts. Plan both before you apply.
