How Hard Is the CSCS Test?

Why people fail a test they revised for, in four traps: only five wrong answers allowed where 90 percent is the bare minimum rather than a good score, multi-answer questions where you score only if you select them all, the by-the-book answer rather than the shortcut you have seen used, and breadth across COSHH, RIDDOR and HAVS rather than depth in your own trade. 21 revision topics, 50 questions drawn, 45 out of 50 to pass, no penalty for guessing. Honest answer: the questions themselves are not difficult, but the 90% pass mark is unforgiving. You can only get five wrong out of fifty. That combination — easy questions, tight margin — is why people who “wing it” fail and pay twice.

What makes it harder than people expect

  • Only 5 wrong answers allowed. On most exams 90% would be an excellent score; here it is the bare minimum.
  • Multi-answer questions. Some questions need two or three answers and you only score the mark if you select all of them — a common way to drop points.
  • The “by the book” answer. Questions test what you should do on a compliant site, which is not always the shortcut you have seen used in real life.
  • Breadth, not depth. Questions span everything from COSHH symbols to RIDDOR to hand-arm vibration. You can be strong on your own trade and still fail on the topics you never touch.

What makes it easier than people expect

  • The syllabus is published. CITB tells you exactly which knowledge areas are examinable — there are no surprises.
  • It is multiple choice. No written answers, no practical assessment, and you can flag questions and come back.
  • There is no penalty for guessing. Only correct answers count, so never leave one blank.
  • 45 minutes for 50 questions is roughly 54 seconds each — comfortable for recall questions.

How to make it easy

  1. Take a full timed mock first, cold, to find your weak topics.
  2. Drill those topics in the topic question banks with the explanations turned on.
  3. Go back to full timed mocks and don't book the real test until you clear 45/50 consistently, not once.
