CSCS Test Day: What to Bring & What to Expect

The test itself is 45 minutes, but plan for around 90 minutes at the centre. Here is exactly how the day runs.
Your checklist
- ✔ Your booking confirmation email or letter
- ✔ ID showing your photo and signature — see the accepted ID list
- ✔ Arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot
- ✔ Under 16? Bring your completed parental consent form
How the day runs
- 1
Arrival and ID check
Centre staff verify your documents. Without acceptable ID you cannot sit the test and the fee is not refunded.
- 2
Storage and settling in
Personal items go into storage. You will be shown to a computer terminal — the test is touch-screen or mouse-driven, and no computer experience is needed.
- 3
The tutorial
Before the clock starts there is a short tutorial explaining how to move through questions, flag them and review. This does not eat into your 45 minutes.
- 4
The test — 45 minutes, 50 questions
A countdown timer runs on screen. You can flag questions and come back to them. Watch for questions asking for more than one answer.
- 5
Your result and score report
You leave the room and are given a score report with your result. Keep it safe — it carries the test ID number you need for your CSCS card application, and if you failed it shows where you dropped marks.
Support and reasonable adjustments
CITB offers reasonable adjustments at Pearson Professional Centres, including voiceovers, British Sign Language interpreters and support for reading difficulties. The Operatives test is available with voiceovers in a range of languages; the MAP and Specialist tests are English or Welsh only. Request support when you book, not on the day — the specialist assistance line is 0344 994 4491.
Not booked yet? See how to book your test. Passed? Move on to applying for your card.
Not sure where you are sitting it? Compare the CSCS test centres — Pearson Professional Centres and Internet Test Centres run to different rules, and the voucher requirement at an ITC catches people out.
