CSCS Practice Test

CSCS Test Cost (2026)

What getting your card actually costs, as a bar chart: HS and E test 23.50, CSCS card application 36.00, phone reschedule 5.00, phone cancellation 10.00. Headline figures: 23.50 pounds per test attempt, 36 pounds card application, 59.50 pounds minimum passing first time, 83 pounds if you fail once. Sites still quoting 22.50 are using the old fee.

The CITB Health, Safety and Environment test costs £23.50per attempt — the same for Operatives, Specialist and Managers & Professionals versions.

Costs to plan for

  • Test fee: £23.50 (payable per attempt — a fail means paying again to retake).
  • Phone rescheduling fee: £5; phone cancellation admin fee: £10. Online changes made 72+ hours ahead are free.
  • CSCS card application: separate fee paid to CSCS when you apply for your card after passing.
  • Qualifications: some cards (e.g. the Green Labourer card) also require a qualification such as the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment.

What the £23.50 does and does not cover

The fee buys one sitting of one version of the test, booked through Pearson VUE on CITB’s behalf. It covers the appointment, the on-screen tutorial beforehand and your score report at the end. It does not cover a retake, the CSCS card application that follows, or any qualification your card requires. Those are separate transactions with separate organisations, which is where most of the confusion about “how much a CSCS card costs” comes from: the test and the card are two different purchases.

Be careful with third-party booking sites. The test is £23.50 booked directly, and sites that add a booking or administration charge on top are reselling something you can buy yourself. Book online through Pearson VUE, by phone on 0344 994 4488, or through an approved Internet Test Centre. There is a separate Welsh-language booking line on 0344 994 4490.

You may also see the old £22.50 figure quoted. That price is out of date, and a page still showing it is a reasonable signal that its other facts have not been checked recently either.

Changing or cancelling without losing the fee

The 72-hour mark is the one to remember. Reschedule or cancel online more than 72 hours before your appointment and it costs nothing. Inside 72 hours there are no changes and no refunds, so the fee is gone and a fresh £23.50 is needed to rebook. Doing it by phone rather than online carries its own charges even outside that window: £5 to reschedule, £10 to cancel.

The other common way to lose the money is turning up without the right identification. No ID means no test and no refund, and the rules on what counts are stricter than people expect, so read the CSCS test ID requirements before the day rather than on it.

Pass first time — pay once

The cheapest CSCS test is the one you only sit once. Practise free with our 50-question timed mock and topic question banks until you consistently score 45/50 or better.

Every attempt costs the full fee, so it is worth reading the CSCS test retake rules before you rebook.
