Failing is not the end of anything. There is no limit on attempts. You rebook, you pay again, you sit it again. The only real cost is £23.50 and the time. Here is how to make the second attempt the last one.

Use your score report: it tells you where you went wrong

When you finish, you get a score report at the test centre. If you failed, it shows the areas where you dropped marks. That is the single most useful revision document you will get, so do not lose it. You can also request a more detailed report from CITB by emailing their testing services feedback address.

How soon can you retake it?

There is no limit on the number of attempts. On the waiting period, CITB does publish a definitive figure, though not on the pages most people read: condition 10.2 of the standard HS&E test booking terms and conditions (April 2026, v17) states that if a candidate fails their test, they will not be allowed to re-sit the test within 48 hours. Third-party revision sites variously quote 24 hours, 48 hours and three working days; the 48-hour figure is the one CITB puts in its own booking contract. Note this is a floor, not a booking guarantee, so still check the earliest available slot when you rebook through Pearson VUE.

In practice, the more useful question is not how soon you can retake, but whether you are ready. Rebooking for tomorrow and failing again costs another £23.50.

What it costs to retake

  • £23.50 per attempt, and the full fee applies every time.
  • Rescheduling an existing booking is free online 72+ hours ahead, or £5 by phone.
  • Cancelling online 72+ hours ahead is a full refund; by phone it carries a £10 admin fee. Inside 72 hours there is no refund.

A four-step plan before you rebook

  1. Read your score report and note the weak areas.
  2. Drill exactly those topics in the CSCS test questions and answers. Read every explanation, including on questions you got right.
  3. Sit full CSCS mock test for Operatives until you clear 45/50 several times running.
  4. Work the CSCS test revision plan in order rather than starting again from the top.
