What is the official CSCS revision book called?

GT100, published by CITB and titled Health, safety and environment test for operatives and specialists. It is an A5 full colour paperback and the current edition is listed in the CITB shop as GT100-V14.1 at £12.50. If you see it referred to as GE707, that is an outdated name for the same publication.

Which sections do I actually need to read?

It depends on your test. CITB says Operatives candidates need sections A to E only. Specialist candidates need sections A to E plus the relevant chapter in section F for their specialism. Reading section F cover to cover when you are sitting the Operatives test is wasted effort.

Does GT100 cover the Managers and Professionals test?

No. MAP has its own separate revision material, the GT200 book, and CITB is explicit that you need to make sure you buy the right one. Buying GT100 for a MAP test is the most expensive mistake on this page.

Are the questions in the book the same as the ones in the test?

Close, but not word for word, and CITB says so directly. It reserves the right to reword questions in the test or the revision materials as part of its plain English commitment, so wording can differ while the meaning stays the same. Learn the reasoning, not the sentence.

Do I need the book if I use free mock tests?

Not necessarily, and we would rather say that than sell you something. Free mocks are good at finding the gaps and getting you used to the clock. The book is better at explaining why an answer is right, and it is the only source CITB will say the test is drawn from. Many people use a mock to find weak topics and the book to fix them.

Does the edition matter?

Yes. CITB states you will be tested on the knowledge presented in the most up to date edition of the revision materials. Buying a cheap old copy second hand is a false economy, so check the edition against what the CITB shop currently lists.

There is one official book and it is called GT100. CITB publishes it, it costs £12.50 in the CITB shop, and it covers the Operatives and Specialist versions of the test. Everything else on the shelf is somebody's interpretation of it.

It is a question and answer book rather than a textbook. CITB describes it as containing all of the content covered within the test in question and answer form, which is why it reads more like a reference than something you sit down and read end to end.

Read only the sections your test uses

This is the single most useful thing to know before opening it, and almost nobody says it.

Operatives: sections A to E only.
Specialists: sections A to E, plus the one chapter in section F that matches your specialism.
Managers and Professionals: not this book at all. MAP uses GT200.

Section F is where the twelve specialist subject areas live: supervisory, demolition, highway works, specialist work at height, lifts and escalators, tunnelling, plumbing (JIB), and the five HVACR and HVACE areas covering heating and plumbing services, pipefitting and welding, ductwork, refrigeration and air conditioning, and service and facilities maintenance.

Do not memorise the wording

CITB states that it reserves the right to update the wording used in the tests or the revision materials, and that this may mean questions in the test are worded differently from the questions in the book, while the meaning stays the same.

That single sentence should change how you use it. Learning the shape of an answer will not survive a rewrite. Learning why the answer is right will. It is also why our practice questions by topic are paraphrased and carry an explanation rather than reproducing anyone's question bank.
