Is there a special labourer test?

No. People search for a labourer test because the Labourer card is what they are applying for, but the exam is the standard Operatives paper. There is no shorter or easier version for labouring roles.

Do I need anything besides the test?

Yes, and this trips up more applicants than the exam does. A Labourer card needs the HS&E test pass and a separate qualification, normally the Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment, or one of the alternatives CSCS accepts. Passing the test on its own will not get you a card.

Two hurdles, not one

Nearly everyone who gets stuck on this route got stuck because they thought there was one thing to do. There are two, they are set by different organisations, and you need both.

What is on the Operatives test

CITB groups the Operatives syllabus into five core knowledge areas: the working environment, occupational health, safety, high risk activities, and specialist. Our practice questions by topic break those down further into revision topics so you can work on one weakness at a time.

The areas that cost labouring candidates the most marks tend to be the ones furthest from the day job: CDM regulations, accident reporting and RIDDOR and environmental awareness and waste. The manual work ones, like manual handling and PPE, usually look after themselves.

Choosing your Level 1 course carefully

CSCS accepts the Level 1 Award or a list of alternatives, and the difference between them matters more than the price.

The Level 1 Award has lifetime validity. Do it once and it never needs redoing.
The alternatives expire, and can only be used once. Most run five years; the IOSH Safety, Health and Environment for Construction Workers course runs three. You will need to retake when you next renew.
Five-year alternatives must be recent. CSCS requires them to have been completed within four years of the application, specifically so a course cannot be stretched across two card cycles.
IOSH e-learning is not accepted. CSCS accepts that course classroom or virtual face to face only, which is an easy and expensive mistake to make.

If you expect to be labouring for more than a couple of years, the lifetime Level 1 Award is usually the cheaper answer even when it is the pricier course.

After you pass
