Then why is it called an Internet Test Centre?

Because the test is delivered to the centre over the internet rather than on paper or on a disc. The word describes how the questions reach the terminal, not where you sit. An Internet Test Centre is a room with booked seats that you travel to.

Is the CITB eCourse the same as the HS&E test?

No, and this is the most common mix-up. CITB advertises its eCourses as fully remote with no tutor required. They are training courses. The HS&E test is a separate 50-question exam sat at a centre, and passing an eCourse does not pass it for you.

I was told I could do my CSCS card course online. Was that wrong?

Probably not, but it was a different thing. The Level 1 Award, and several CSCS-approved alternatives such as the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course, can be delivered online. That qualification sits alongside the HS&E test for a Labourer card. You still have to sit the test in a centre.

Short answer: you book it online, you revise online, and then you go somewhere and sit it in person. There is no at-home version of the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test. The confusion is understandable, because CITB calls its venues Internet Test Centres, and that name has convinced a lot of people they can do the whole thing from the sofa.

Why “Internet Test Centre” does not mean the internet

An Internet Test Centre, or ITC, is a physical room with booked seats and a member of staff who checks your ID. The word “internet” describes how the exam paper reaches the terminal, not where you are sitting when you answer it. Before the questions were delivered over a network they arrived on discs, and the name was a genuine distinction at the time. It has aged badly.

CITB gives two booking routes and both end at a venue. You book with Pearson VUE online or by phone on 0344 994 4488, or you book directly with your local ITC. Then you turn up, with ID that includes your photo and signature, and sit it on a CSCS touch screen test terminal.

The three things people are mixing up

Almost everyone who arrives here searching for an online CITB test is thinking of one of three different products. Only one of them is the exam.

If a training provider told you your “CSCS course” could be done online, they were almost certainly talking about the second row. That is true, and it is useful, but it does not replace the exam. The full route is set out on CSCS test for labourers.

Be careful what you are buying

Because the phrase is ambiguous, “CITB test online” is a useful search term for anyone selling something. If a site offers to sell you an online CITB test, read the small print before you pay: you are being sold either a revision product or a Level 1 course, and neither is the exam. The exam itself costs £23.50 and is booked through CITB and Pearson VUE.

There is no legitimate route that ends with a CITB HS&E test pass without you attending a centre in person. Anything promising one is worth walking away from.

What to do instead

Do everything online that can be done online, then book the one thing that cannot.
