CSCS Test for Supervisors

Three tests, and only one of them is yours

CITB runs the Health, safety and environment test at three levels, and the card you are applying for decides which one you need. This is the whole question, so it is worth thirty seconds:

Two things in that table catch people out. Specialist tests are also required for Blue Skilled Worker and Gold Skilled Worker (Advanced Craft) cards in certain occupations, so Specialist does not automatically mean supervisor. And the Gold Skilled Worker card, which CSCS also still calls Advanced Craft, is gold like yours yet normally takes the Operatives test, so if a mate on gold told you what to book, check whose gold card he meant on the Gold CSCS card page. What booking the wrong variant costs

Every variant costs the same £23.50, so the price will not warn you. Nor will the centre: the paper you booked is the paper you get. You find out when the card application is rejected, by which point you are paying the CSCS test cost twice and taking a second day off.

Two habits prevent it. Run your occupation through the official CSCS Card Finder first, and read how to book the CSCS test so you recognise the Specialist route when you reach it. CITB books the three variants as separate exams, so check your confirmation email names the Specialist test and the Supervisory topic before you travel. If it says Operatives, you are booked on the wrong paper.

Wherever you book, you sit it in person, either at a Pearson Professional Centre or at an approved Internet Test Centre, usually a local training provider. The test travels over the internet; you do not. There is no at home option for any variant, and that centre name is the main reason people believe otherwise, which has its own page: CITB test online.

What is on the supervisor test

CITB builds every Specialist paper the same way: the five core knowledge areas from the Operatives test, plus questions on your specialist topic. Most of your revision is therefore the revision every operative does, with supervision material on top rather than instead.

The core areas are the working environment, occupational health, safety, high risk activities and specialist. The topics that reward supervisors are the ones about duties rather than tools: general responsibilities and risk assessment, CDM regulations and leadership and management, which is the closest bank we hold to the SUP material.

The Supervisory topic itself leans on the parts of the job you already do: permits to work and method statements, induction and competence, stopping unsafe work, near miss reporting and toolbox talks. Scoring is identical across all three variants and unforgiving: 45 out of 50, which is 90%. Five wrong answers are survivable and a sixth is not, as the CSCS test pass mark page sets out.

The card at the end of it

Pass the Specialist Supervisory test and the card it supports is the Gold Supervisory card, which CSCS also calls the Gold Supervisor card. CSCS makes it available for supervisor and technical occupations that have achieved a construction related Supervisory or Technical NVQ or SVQ at Level 3 or 4, and the card runs for five years. • The pass has a shelf life.CSCS requires the appropriate HS&E test to have been passed within the last two years at the point of application, or an approved alternative. Sit it when your qualification is close, not years ahead of it.
• The test fee is not the card fee. £23.50 buys the exam. The card application is a separate £36, so budget £59.50 for a clean first run and see CSCS card cost for the rest.
• The qualification does the heavy lifting. The test proves safety knowledge; it does not prove you supervise. You need both, and the qualification is the longer job of the two.

A revision order that works

Fix the core before the supervisory material, because the core is the bigger share of the 50 questions and no specialist section rescues a weak one. Sit a free CSCS practice test cold, drill the two weakest topics, then come back to the CSCS specialist mock test and repeat until 45 out of 50 is routine rather than lucky.
