Note that the JIB terms and conditions for the scheme, dated May 2018, use a three month window instead, and treat anything submitted earlier as a replacement that carries the same expiry date across. You can renew your ECS card once it has less than six months left before it expires, and ECS also lets you renew a card that has already expired. Renewal is done online through MyECS in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and through the SJIB portal in Scotland, and it costs less than a first card. The part most people miss is the health and safety requirement: a renewal needs a current pass in the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment or an accepted exemption, and because a pass only stays usable for two years while a Craft or Manager card runs for three, most cardholders sit the assessment again at renewal. Renewing does not use the CITB HS&E test

ECS requires a current pass in its own ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment, and states that it cannot accept the CITB (CSCS) test in its place. That holds at renewal exactly as it does for a first card. Several CITB courses are on the ECS exemptions list, which is a different thing from the CITB test. When you can renew your ECS card

The ECS renewal page opens with the answer: "Have you got less than six months before your ECS card expires? You'll need to renew your card". The ECS frequently asked questions repeat it in a flatter form, "You can renew your card when it has less than 6 months before its expiry date". So the window opens six months out. There is no need to wait until the final week, and ECS sends renewal reminders through MyECS provided your postal address, email and phone number are up to date, which is worth checking now rather than after a reminder has gone to an old address.

One caution, because ECS publishes two different figures and you may hit either. The JIB terms and conditions for the scheme, dated May 2018 and linked from the ECS FAQ page, say at clause 4.3 that "A renewal application may be made strictly within the three months prior to an existing ECS registration/cards expiry date or at any time after the expiry date", and that an application made earlier than that is treated as a replacement, which issues an identical card with an identical expiry date. The ECS FAQ answer about lost and damaged cards uses the same three month boundary from the other direction. The six month figure is on the current renewal page and the current FAQ, so that is the one we lead with, but if MyECS will not let you start a renewal yet, the three month rule in the terms is the likely reason.

The practical point behind both figures is the same. Applying too early does not extend your card, because a replacement carries the old expiry date across. Applying too late leaves you without a valid card while the renewal is processed, and ECS quotes roughly two to three weeks for a MyECS renewal. Starting once the six month reminder lands is the safe habit.

Do you have to retake the ECS assessment to renew?

In most cases yes, and this is the single most misunderstood part of ECS card renewal. Step 3 of the ECS renewal process is "Meet the Health and Safety Requirements", and the checklist of what you need to renew includes "A valid H&S Assessment or exemption". The ECS FAQ spells out why that usually means sitting it again: "You must make your application for an ECS card within two years of successfully passing the assessment", the pass is "then recognised as valid for the life of the ECS card once issued (typically three years depending on the card type)", and "There is no need to retake the assessment until it is time to renew an ECS card held". A pass that supported your current card is spent when that card expires, so a renewal needs a fresh one.

The assessment is the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment: 50 multiple choice questions in 30 minutes, with 43 correct answers needed to pass. Questions are drawn at random from a bank of over 300 published in the free ECS revision guide, and it is a closed book assessment. ECS recommends studying the revision guide for at least ten working days beforehand. It can be sat at home under remote invigilation through MyECS or the Employer Portal, or face to face through selected employers and training providers.

There is a genuine way to skip the retake. ECS publishes an exemptions list, and a certificate on it exempts you if it was issued within three years of the JIB receiving your application. Several CITB courses are on that list, including the CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course, SSSTS, SMSTS and the SMSTS Refresher, as are the CCNSG and Safety Passport Alliance courses and several NEBOSH qualifications. Note the distinction that catches people out: those are CITB courses, not the CITB test. IOSH courses have not been accepted since 31 August 2023, and ECS states there are no exemptions for any of the ECS partner cards.

Renewing an ECS card that has already expired

This is the question most people arrive with, and the answer is reassuring. The ECS existing cardholders page says it in one line: "You can renew your card even if it's already expired." The JIB terms agree, defining a renewal application as one made "within three months of, or after, the expiry of a registration or card already issued under the scheme rules", with no closing date attached. We could not find any published cut-off after which ECS refuses a renewal and forces a fresh application, so we are not going to invent one.

There is one documented consequence of letting a card lapse, and it is specific rather than general. ECS records that from 1 July 2019, an existing Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card holder who has let the card lapse for more than a year has to renew as an ECS Registered Electrician. The concession for cardholders who do not hold the 18th Edition of BS 7671 only survives "providing your card does not become more than one year out of date". Renewing as a Registered Electrician means holding the 18th Edition and signing up to the Code of Professional Practice, so a gold card left more than twelve months past its expiry date can turn a straightforward renewal into a qualification problem.

Some ECS cards cannot be renewed at all, whatever the timing, because they are stages in a programme rather than standing qualifications. ECS names Trainee cards, Experienced Worker cards, Provisional grade cards and Industry Placement cards. For those, the route forward is meeting the next stage of the requirements rather than renewing, and the JIB handbook sets out what that involves.

Meanwhile, an expired card will show as expired when a contractor checks it, and Alliance scheme cards including ECS can be verified electronically. Do not rely on a receipt or a pending application to get you through a gate check. Give the renewal the two to three weeks it needs.

What ECS card renewal costs

The fee schedule ECS links from its own fees page and from its FAQ is a document titled ECS Card Payment Details, dated February 2024, with fees valid from 1 March 2024. On that schedule a renewal or replacement card is GBP 37.50 plus VAT, which is GBP 45 including VAT, against GBP 46.50 plus VAT (GBP 55.80 including VAT) for an initial card. So renewal is cheaper than applying from scratch, by GBP 9 before VAT. That is the most recent schedule ECS publishes at that link, and we checked it on 23 August 2026; it has not been reissued since February 2024, so treat the figures as the published rate rather than a quote and confirm the total MyECS calculates for you at the payment step.

Discounts exist and they are worth checking before you pay. Employees of JIB member companies who are listed on that company's Employer Portal account pay GBP 26 plus VAT (GBP 31.20) for a renewal or replacement card. Someone who is both a Unite the Union member and employed by a JIB member company, applying online, pays GBP 20.83 plus VAT (GBP 25) and needs to supply a photocopy of their union membership. Member discounts are not available through MyECS unless your employer has listed you on the Employer Portal, and they are not available at all on a paper application, which also carries a GBP 10 plus VAT administration fee.

The assessment is charged separately from the card. On the same schedule the ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment is GBP 46.50 plus VAT (GBP 55.80) at the standard rate, or GBP 31 plus VAT (GBP 37.20) at the JIB company member discounted rate. Training providers set their own prices for the assessment and ECS says to check with them directly.

One warning worth repeating because it is ECS's own. Its fees page says: "Do not pay additional fees for an assessment or application! There is no need to use a third party or agent to book an assessment or apply for an ECS card for you. Agents will make charges for booking on top of our normal fees and you will be paying more than you need to." Several sites that rank for ECS renewal searches are application agents. How to renew through MyECS, step by step

ECS sets out three steps, and they are deliberately the same shape as a first application with one word changed throughout: a first application says the JIB cannot issue you a card without proof of qualifications, and the renewal page says it cannot renew your card without that proof. Step one is a MyECS account. You renew online through MyECS and track the application from there, and MyECS also carries any card-specific messages, such as new criteria or a note that you must renew through an ECS partner organisation. Registering needs your personal email address, National Insurance number, date of birth, and one of your surname, ECS card number or health and safety assessment number.

Step two is checking the qualification requirements for your card, because the criteria for some cards have changed. If you are changing your ECS occupation or JIB grade you also have to evidence the additional qualifications for the new one. Anything new gets uploaded as a scan or a good quality photograph in PDF or JPEG format.

Step three is the health and safety requirement covered above: a current ECS assessment pass, or a qualification from the exemptions list issued within three years of the JIB receiving your application. MyECS shows your assessment expiry date, so check it there before you start rather than guessing. Once those three are in place the renewal is submitted and paid for inside MyECS, and ECS quotes roughly two to three weeks to turn a renewal around, against about four weeks for a first card. The JIB terms allow up to 30 working days.

In Scotland the scheme is administered by the Scottish Joint Industry Board and the route is different. The SJIB says that to apply for a new ECS card, renew an existing card or upgrade, you use the SJIB ECS portal rather than MyECS. The card is the same ECS card and the JIB recognises the SJIB assessment, but the portal you log into is not.

How long a renewed card lasts, and what you may have to prove again

An ECS card is valid from its date of issue for a maximum of three years, and the length varies by registration type. The JIB terms set out ECS Craft and Managers at three years, ECS Trainee registration stages at 24 months, JIB Apprentice registration at 60 months, and Provisional grades, Mature Candidate Assessment and Experienced Worker at 18 months. The ECS FAQ gives the same picture in everyday wording, adding that Industry Placement cards run for three years. So a renewed Craft or Manager card gives you another three years, and that is why the two year life of an assessment pass never lines up with it.

Renewal is also the moment when changed card criteria catch up with you. The JIB reserves the right to change the registration requirements of any card type "either during the life of the card or at renewal", and ECS has used it. Existing FESS cardholders without a formal industry apprenticeship had to meet the new Fire, Emergency and Security Systems requirements when their cards came up for renewal after 1 July 2021, existing Network Infrastructure cardholders had an equivalent change, and Related Discipline cards moved to a new set of requirements including the ECS Electrical Safety Unit assessment for all applications, existing cardholders at renewal included, from 1 July 2020.

In practice that means renewal is not automatic. You do not have to re-upload qualifications the JIB has already validated and holds against your record, but you do have to satisfy the criteria as they stand on the day your application is received, and you upload anything new or updated.
